Congruent Triangles

Congruence

Geometrical figures are said to be congruent if they are the same in shape and size. One shape can be fitted exactly over the other by rotation, translation, and reflection.

Rotation

Rotate a triangle by dragging the red point on the circle. Fit the red triangle exactly on the blue triangle.

You can move the center point of the rotation.

Translation

Drag the head point of the arrow so that the red triangle fit on the blue triangle.

Reflection

Drag the two end points of the mirror line of reflection. Place the red triangle on the blue triangle.

Congruent Triangles

Two triangles are congruent if they have the relations listed below.

SAS

Two pairs of congruent sides and one pair of congruent angles (angle between sides)

(Side-Angle-Side)

ASA

Two pairs of congruent angles and one pair of congruent sides
(side between angles)

(Angle-Side-Angle)

AAS

Two pairs of congruent angles and one pair of congruent sides
(side not between angles)

(Angle-Angle-Side)

SSS

Three pairs of congruent sides

(Side-Side-Side)

RHS

If the hypotenuse and the leg of one right triangle are congruent to the corresponding parts of the second right triangle, the two triangles are congruent.
